Antel expands fibre-optic network

11 Apr 2007

State-run Antel has expanded its fibre-optic network to the city of Melo, according to a statement by the government, quoted by BNamericas. Antel began deploying the infrastructure in 1985, beginning with the capital Montevideo, and the latest move now means all 19 department capitals are covered by the 4,700km network. The fixed line telco plans to invest USD11 million in 2007 to increase its broadband connectivity infrastructure fourfold. It also hopes to boost its broadband subscriber base to 140,000 by the end of 2007, up from 102,000 at the end of 2006.
