Russian cellcos to get fixed numbers, says ministry

5 Apr 2007

Russia’s Ministry of IT and Communications (MinSvyaz) intends to give cellular operators the right to issue their own fixed geographical telephone numbers, the ministry told the Prime-Tass news agency. Under the proposals, fixed line providers will release a certain part of their numbering capacity, previously reserved for them alone, which the Federal Communications Agency (Rossvyaz) will transfer to mobile licensees. MinSvyaz hopes the necessary amendments will come into force after coordination with the federal executive bodies concerned and approval by the government.
