Anatel aiming for WiMAX auction relauch

3 Apr 2007

Brazilian newspapers, quoted by BNamericas, have reported communications minister Hélio Costa saying that Anatel plans to relaunch an auction for 3.5GHz and 10GHz spectrum licenses to provide WiMAX services ‘as soon as possible’. According to the minister, the telecoms regulator needs to address issues relating to bidding rules which led the country’s federal accounts court, TCU, to order Anatel to suspend the auction in September 2006. The TCU said that the use of an outdated exchange rate could have led to a possible loss of BRL23 million (USD10 million) for the state. The court also highlighted the problems surrounding the exclusion of major fixed line operators from competing for licenses in areas where they have existing concessions.
