Mobile data market up 77% in 2006

The US mobile data market was worth USD15.2 billion in 2006 according to a study released by the country’s wireless operators association CTIA. The market grew 77% year-on-year, with non-voice services now accounting for 13% of all mobile service revenues. A total of 158 billion SMS text messages were sent in 2006, up 95% on the 2005 figure, while the number of MMS increased from 1.1 billion to 2.7 billion. There were almost 225 million wireless subscribers in the US at the end of 2006, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.
