EDC’s got the power

29 Mar 2007

Newly nationalised Venezuelan power utility EDC has launched a pilot broadband power line (BPL) service in Caracas, the company’s president Julián Nebreda told BNamericas. EDC has around 1.1 million electricity customers in Caracas and the state of Yaracuy, and claims that the new service can be expanded to cover its entire customer footprint.

Another Venezuelan state-owned utility, Cadafe, is reportedly also investigating the possibilities of rolling out BPL services. Cadafe is in the process of building a fibre-optic network in partnership with Chinese vendor ZTE, overlaid on its existing power lines.
