BT gets green light to bid for Pipex, papers say

26 Mar 2007

BT Group has won regulatory approval to buy broadband internet services provider Pipex Communications, reports the London-based Times without citing sources. BT was blocked by regulators last year from buying the UK arm of AOL, the Times said. But BT is not the only interested party; Pipex has also piqued the interest of Carphone Warehouse, British Sky Broadcasting Group, Virgin Media, Tiscali and Orange. Pipex announced last month it had hired investment bank UBS to advise it on a possible sale, which is rumoured could raise in excess of GBP400 million.
