Congress approves mobile number portability

23 Mar 2007

Peru’s Congress has approved a bill by 71-14 votes to implement mobile number portability (MNP), writes BNamericas citing local press reports. The vote follows a recommendation from the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) to begin implementing the service from 2010. Congress is required to hold a second vote on the proposal and if approved the bill will go to the executive branch for ratification. Peru’s timeframe for MNP implementation is much longer than that of some of it neighbours: Mexican telecoms regulator Cofetel required implementation within eleven months while Brazil’s telecoms regulator Anatel approved MNP earlier this month, setting a deadline of two years for implementation.
