The Portuguese telecoms regulator ANACOM is proposing to open up the 900MHz band for 3G services. ANACOM says it plans to introduce a more technology-neutral approach to its spectrum policy. It is also planning to remove the provision which reserves 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum for the three incumbent GSM operators, TMN, Vodafone and Optimus. A 20-day consultation period has been launched, with the regulator inviting the views of interested parties. Vodafone completed initial tests of UMTS 900 technology in December.
