Malaysia issues WiMAX licences

19 Mar 2007

Malaysia has issued four national WiMAX licences: to Bizsurf (2330MHz-2360MHz, Peninsular Malaysia), MIB Comm (2360MHz-2390MHz, Peninsular Malaysia), Asiaspace Dotcom (2300MHz-2330MHz, Peninsular Malaysia) and Redtone-CNX Broadband (2375MHz-2400MHz, Sabah and Sarawak). The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it expects all winners to invest between MYR250 million (USD71 million) and MYR300 million in the implementation of WiMAX networks over the next three years. Operators are expected to roll out services to 25% of the population in their licence areas within a year, with a service offering download speeds of at least 1Mbps. By the end of the third year, it is expected that coverage will be at least 40% of the population.
