Big plans for mobile networks

The second and third placed mobile operators in Vietnam, MobiFone and VinaPhone, are set for ambitious expansion during 2007, according to Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) president Vu Taun Hung. VNPT, which owns the two cellcos, plans to make up ground on the largest cellco by subscribers, the military-owned Viettel. In figures, VNPT plans to triple the number of base transceiver stations (BTS) in operation to 9,000 across the two networks. VinaPhone, the larger of the two, is aiming to sign up 2.5 million subscribers this year, up from the 1.7 million it acquired in 2006. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Vinaphone ended 2006 with 5.22 million subscribers, while MobiFone boasted an estimated 4.65 million at the same time.
