Consolidation expected in satellite broadband market

15 Mar 2007

BNamericas, quoting consultancy Signals Telecom, reports that Argentina’s relatively small satellite broadband sector is currently shared by seven operators and that consolidation will be necessary at some point. Three multiservice providers operate in the segment, Comsat, Impsat and Telefónica de Argentina (TAR), and between them have 50% of the satellite broadband market; the other half is shared by four firms which focus exclusively on satellite broadband; Hispasat, Servicio Satelital, Telespazio and Velconet. The sector accounts for 1% of the total broadband market. Consolidation will happen as larger operators, who require larger scales, acquire or associate with the smaller firms, according to the consultancy.
