China Unicom to launch GPRS in ‘key cities’

13 Mar 2007

A representative from China Unicom has disclosed to local media that China Unicom will formally launch GPRS services in 50 cities across the People’s Republic at ‘an appropriate time’ this year. Tong Xiaoyu, general manager of China Unicom’s value-added service department, had disclosed at the end of 2006 that starting in 2007 his company would take the lead promoting GPRS service in up to 100 cities. The report says that Beijing Unicom has already launched a limited GPRS service and is planning to put it into widespread commercial use very soon. Sister company Shanghai Unicom is also reported to have upgraded to GPRS at the end of last year and launched related value-added services on a trial basis.
