Saudis get ten offers for wireline licence

12 Mar 2007

The Saudi government has short-listed ten companies as candidates to run the country’s second national wireline operator. Bidders include Verizon of the US, Etisalat of the UAE, Batelco of Bahrain, China Telecom, Korea Telecom, Qatar Telecom, MTNL of India, Hong Kong’s PCCW, WorldCall of Pakistan, and a consortium involving Electronet and Autelia. The tenders will be reviewed and approved for entry into an auction later this year. The new licensee is expected to launch its first services in 2008, competing against current monopoly, Saudi Telecom Company (STC).
