Cooperative plans fibre link with Chile

8 Mar 2007

BNamericas reports that Coopetel, a telecoms cooperative in the southern Argentine province of Rio Negro, is planning a project to connect El Bolsón in Argentina to Puerto Montt on the Chilean coast. Under the plan, which the cooperative hopes will be paid for by the Argentine government, a 100km fibre-optic cable would be laid between El Bolsón and the Chilean border, from where a microwave link would be established with Puerto Montt. The cost has been put at USD1.2 million, and Coopetel’s president Amilcar Andreasi has stated that it could be completed by January 2008.
