Italian broadband operator FastWeb says it is preparing to launch a new global internet TV network under the name Babelgum. The service will use peer-to-peer technology to provide free video to broadband users. Content deals for the service are still being negotiated, Associated Press reports, but FastWeb’s founder Silvio Scaglia says that video content will be professionally produced and will be aimed at niche markets. An internet TV service has already been introduced by Joost, which was set up by the team behind VoIP provider Skype. Joost has signed content deals with media companies such as Viacom.
