Azercell subscriber base up a third in 2006

7 Mar 2007

Azerbaijan cellco Azercell has reported a 33% increase in its subscriber base in 2006, to 2.33 million users, of which 96.1% were pre-paid. The company’s CEO Halim Ates said at a news conference that the company had invested USD120 million in 2006 and planned a similar spend during 2007, with the aim of installing 350 new base transmitter stations. The cellco is expecting a more modest increase in its customer numbers this year, to 2.5 million, perhaps due to the launch of a fourth mobile operator Azerfon (Narmobile), expected this month. Azercell’s network currently covers 77% of the country’s territory,
