According to Russian news agency Prime-Tass, Mold Telecom will begin offering mobile services today. The state-owned dominant fixed line operator will launch CDMA2000 1x services and compete against existing cellcos Moldcell (backed by TeliaSonera) and Voxtel (Orange). The telco revealed that it began providing fixed line services over the CDMA-based network in 2005, but was awarded a licence in June 2006 allowing it to start offering mobile services. The operator stated that it planned to sign up 40,000 users before the end of 2007. Competition will increase further this year when Cypriot-Moldovan company Eventis Mobile is expected to launch; in January it won a 15-year GSM licence.
