Ericsson wins three-year GSM expansion contract from Idea Cellular

27 Feb 2007

Ericsson and Indian cellco Idea Cellular have signed a three-year contract for the expansion of the latter’s GSM networks in the Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh telecom circles. Under the contract Ericsson will provide radio access, microwave transmission and next-generation, mobile softswitch network architecture, between February 2007 and November 2009. As the sole supplier, Ericsson will help Idea build a state-of-the-art cellular network across the five circles, which will enable the cellco to make a smooth transition to a 3G-ready network once 3G spectrum allocation is finalised.
