Bakrie Telecom not selling stake to SK Telecom

Indonesian fixed wireless access (FWA) operator Bakrie Telecom (BTEL), the telecoms arm of the Bakrie Group, has dismissed a press rumour suggesting it is planning to sell a stake in the company to SK Telecom of South Korea. Bakrie Telecom director Rakhmat Junaidi was quoted by Antara News as saying, ‘I want to clarify that stories in the media to the effect that SK Telecom will acquire a stake in BTEL are groundless. We have never been involved in negotiations with other companies about their becoming strategic partners.’ Mr Junaidi went on to confirm that while the two companies, along with officials from several other operators, had held recently held discussions, the subject of the possible sale of BTEL had never taken place. ‘They just wanted to know more about BTEL. But it doesn’t mean they want to get involved in BTEL’s management,’ he said.
