The CEO of Nigeria’s most subscribed cellco, MTN Nigeria, has said that inadequate power supply is to blame for 44% of network failures. At a meeting in Lagos, Ahmad Farrouk told Information Minister Frank Nweke Jr that poor electricity supply was impeding growth of the wireless industry. He went on to say that other challenges facing cellcos were theft and vandalism of network equipment, multiple taxation and high import duties on essential equipment. Mr Nweke is currently on a ‘familiarisation tour’ of the mobile phone industry. MTN Nigeria, part of the pan-African MTN Group, commenced operations in 2001 and ended 3Q 2006 with 10.375 million subscribers.
