UMC’s CDMA-450 service operational by July

19 Feb 2007

Ukraine’s second largest cellco Ukrainian Mobile Communications (UMC) plans to launch commercial CDMA 450MHz mobile services by July, its General Director Adam Voyatski reported to Prime-Tass late last week. Voyatski also said that UMC has selected an equipment vendor for the network, but did not name the company. The network is scheduled to undergo testing within two months. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, GSM operator UMC paid UAH94 million (USD19.5 million) for a CDMA-450 data services licence in July 2006, before adding a voice concession for an additional UAH9 million in September. In October 2006 it began a tender for the supply of CDMA equipment for a first phase rollout of 70 base stations in major cities, including Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa and Kharkiv.
