19 Feb 2007

T-Mobile, the wireless arm of the German incumbent Deutsche Telekom, has engaged the services of French vendor Alcatel-Lucent to enhance the former’s GSM network with EDGE technology, enabling data rates of up to 220kbps. The contract, the value of which has not been revealed, will see Alcatel-Lucent upgrading several thousand base stations with EDGE capability, as well as replacing hundreds of base station controllers with new models suitable for handling the high data rates. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2007. T-Mobile is the leading cellco in Germany by subscribers with a customer base of 30.6 million at the end of Q3 2006.
