Altech to trial mobile WiMAX

16 Feb 2007

The South African equipment manufacturer Altech is making a bid to become a telco in its own right, having been granted a licence allowing it to test WiMAX wireless broadband services. The firm has partnered with Samsung to trial 802.16e mobile WiMAX technology, Business Day reports, with tests scheduled to begin in June. Four firms – Telkom, Neotel, iBurst and Sentech – currently hold commercial WiMAX licences in South Africa, while cellular operators Vodacom and MTN both hold temporary trial concessions. More information on WiMAX trials and deployments can be found in TeleGeography’s WiMAX Market Tracking Service.
