Uruguay’s largest cellco by subscribers Ancel has revealed plans to grow its customer base by 25% in 2007. The mobile unit of state-owned telco Antel finished 2006 with almost one million users, and expects to end 2007 with 1.25 million. According to Antel VP Edgardo Carvalho, Ancel accounts for 20% of Antel’s revenue. Carvalho also said that the telco hopes to reach 140,000 broadband subscribers by the end of the year, up from the current level of 104,000, and that USD90 million has been earmarked for capital expenditure, compared with USD70 million last year. The investment will be mainly targeted at expanding broadband infrastructure, deploying base stations and offering new services through fixed telephony in a move to boost its share of the segment.
