Alcatel-Lucent has announced that it has been awarded a contract by ONEMAX, a broadband wireless access provider serving the Dominican Republic, to deploy what it claims to be the Caribbean’s first commercial universal WiMAX network. Based on the 802.16e-2005 standard for fixed, nomadic and mobile usage, the 3.5GHz network will be deployed in San Domingo before being expanded throughout the country. It will be commercially operational by the third quarter 2007. ONEMAX subscribers as well as tourists will have access to wireless broadband applications including high speed internet access, multimedia and voice over IP (VoIP) services.
