Telkom looking at African expansion

13 Feb 2007

Telkom South Africa is thought to be close to finalising a ZAR70 million (USD9.7 million) deal to acquire the pan-African internet service provider Africa Online. Johannesburg newspaper Business Day cites a source from within Telkom who claims the telco has been in negotiations with the ISP’s parent, UK-based African Lakes, for several weeks. Africa Online has internet operations in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, and also has joint ventures with UUNet/Verizon in Kenya and Zambia.
