M-Tel market share in decline

9 Feb 2007

M-Tel, the mobile subsidiary of Nigeria’s recently privatised incumbent telco NITEL, is reported by AllAfrica.com to have haemorrhaged around a million customers during 2006, from 1.2 million active subscribers at the end of 2005 to only 200,000 at the end of 2006. A severe shortage of money, leading to non-payment of its staff and the lack of maintenance on its network, is thought to be responsible for the fall in patronage. NITEL was privatised at the fourth attempt in November 2006 when 75% of the ailing telco was purchased by the Transnational Corporation (Transcorp) for USD750 million, amid promises of big investment, which have apparently yet to materialise.
