Ukrainian CDMA operator Telesystems has launched commercial 1xEV-DO services in Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk and Odessa, under the brand name PEOPLEnet, over infrastructure supplied by Chinese vendor Huawei. The company told reporters yesterday that it has installed 103 base stations in the three cities and is testing a trial network of ten base stations in Kharkiv. It plans to increase its investment in its 1xEV-DO network to USD130 million this year from around USD50 million in 2006, and is aiming to deploy a total of 1,000 base stations by the end of 2008 to cover 80% of Ukraine’s population. Telesystems has provided 800MHz CDMA IS-95 WiLL services since 1997.
On the PEOPLEnet website, Telesystems is offering two CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-capable mobile handsets, supplied by Motorola and Palm, as well as an EV-DO PC/laptop wireless datacard provided by ZTE, and a USB modem branded with its own name. It also advertises three CDMA2000 1x-capable handsets from ZTE, LG and Pantech.
