Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT), the country’s dominant telecoms services provider, says its mobile units – Smart Communications and Smart-listed Pilipino Telephone (Piltel) – had 24 million mobile subscribers between them at the end of 2006, having added more than a million new users during the fourth quarter alone. PLDT President Napoleon Nazareno confirmed the figure, before adding, ‘We are now handling about 800 million (text) messages a day.’ Wireless operations now account for nearly two-thirds of PLDT’s group revenues. In the nine months to end-September 2006 PLDT said its core earnings were up 11% year-on-year at PHP23.23 billion (USD482 million), while net profit climbed 4% in the same period to PHP25.74 billion.
