MTC joins Algérie Télécom suitors

7 Feb 2007

MTC of Kuwait is reportedly interested in bidding for a stake in Algeria’s dominant telco Algérie Télécom via its African subsidiary Celtel, according to Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Qabas. MTC joins firms such as France Télécom, Telefónica, Etisalat, Portugal Telecom and Deutsche Telekom on the list of firms interested in entering Algeria’s fast-growing telecoms market. The Algerian government is expected to announce more details of its planned part-privatisation of Algérie Télécom in the next few months. The telco lost its monopoly in the fixed line sector last year with the launch of Egyptian-owned Lacom, while it also controls the country’s second largest cellular operator, Mobilis.
