Prime Minister under pressure to complete Albtelecom sale

6 Feb 2007

According to Albanian news reports, prime minister Sali Berisha is under pressure from the Turkish government to ensure that the planned sale of Albtelecom to Turkish group Calik Enerji goes ahead. The former government sold a 76% stake of Albtelecom to Calik Enerji for EUR120 million, but the incoming Berisha administration opted not to ratify the agreement.

However, negotiations resumed last year, with the new government appearing keen to renegotiate with the Turk company rather than to launch a new sale. According to the reports, government officials would like the privatisation to be completed by the end of the year.
