BNA to offer more 3G spectrum in 2008

Germany’s telecom regulator, the BundesNetzAgentur (BNA), has revealed that it intends to auction UMTS licences next year, for frequencies in the 2.6GHz band. The BNA president Matthias Kurth, in an interview with the Berliner Newspaper, said that he couldn’t say whether existing UMTS licensees T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2 and E-Plus would be participating, but that he did expect at least one new player to try and enter the market. This may lead to the cellcos joining the auction in a defensive blocking tactic, preventing any newcomer achieving cheap market entry via an uncontested sale.
