Telecom Italia hit with ULL fine

31 Jan 2007

Telecom Italia has been ordered by a court to pay EUR60 million (USD77.7 million) compensation to broadband internet provider FastWeb for delays experienced in providing unbundled local loop services between 2001 and 2004. FastWeb said Telecom Italia offered no explanation as to why unbundled lines had not been provided within the required timeframe. The case filed by FastWeb covered 11,000 customer connections; FastWeb asked that delays on another 4,000 customer lines should be taken into account but the court said it could not consider these since the application was filed after the arbitration had commenced. FastWeb is also preparing to launch another lawsuit claiming EUR522 million (USD676.5 million) damages from Telecom Italia for restricting competition in the wireline market.
