The Czech Republic’s second largest cable TV and broadband services provider, Liberty Global-backed Karneval Media, has selected data warehouse and monitoring specialist Teradata (a division of NCR Corporation) to help it improve its network monitoring and capacity utilisation. Karneval first worked with Teradata in May 2006 to develop new services such as VoIP telephony, which was launched as a result in September 2006. The Teradata solution allows Karneval to receive detailed reports on network utilisation and track customer behaviour regarding frequency of use and bandwidth needs. The old system was only capable of producing weekly reports and was creaking under the strain of a rapid uptake in subscriber numbers, Karneval said.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, in August 2006 UPC’s parent Liberty Global agreed terms to buy Karneval Media from Betbari Holding of the Netherlands for EUR322.5 million (USD415 million). Karneval Media was formed in 2003 after the Czech Office for the protection of Economic Competition approved the merger of the country’s then second largest operator, Intercable, with the third largest, TES Media. Karneval offers cable TV, high speed internet access and VoIP to residential customers and serves 270,000 cable TV customers and and estimated 57,000 broadband users. Its primary focus is the capital Prague and other large cities.
