Mubadala coughs up for licence

25 Jan 2007

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has validated the unified access service licence awarded a fortnight ago to the Mubadala Development Company (MDC) of the United Arab Emirates, following the payment by the latter of USD400 million. The national licence permits MDC to offer a range of services including local, long-distance and international voice telephony services, and mobile and internet access services, and includes GSM spectrum in the 900MHz & 1800MHz bands. MDC has yet to reveal plans for deploying infrastructure or services. Nigeria has the fastest growing cellular market in Africa, which with around 27 million subscribers at the end of September 2006, was second only in size to South Africa.
