Ancel to improve coverage

According to BNamericas, quoting local newspaper La República, Ancel, the mobile arm of the Uruguayan incumbent Antel, has announced its intention to install 100 new base transmitter stations (BTS) over the coming year, taking the network total to nearly 650. The company’s president, Maria Simón, said that once the work was done Ancel’s network would cover 70% of Uruguayan territory and 97% of the population. The cellco also plans to launch 3G services, initially in Montevideo and other regional capitals, in 2007. Señora Simón added that Ancel ended 2006 with 980,000 mobile subscribers.
