Unicom ends 2006 with 142 million customers

China Unicom, the country’s second largest wireless carrier, said subscribers to its GSM network totalled 105.87 million at the end of December, up from 104.97 million at the end of November. The company said GSM users rose by 6.1 million during the course of 2006, with pre-paid users making up 4.7 million of the total. There were 36.49 million subscribers to Unicom’s CDMA network at the end of December, compared to 36.13 million a month earlier. China Unicom said it added 3.44 million CDMA subscribers in 2006, of which just 327,000 were pre-paid.
