ComReg to be given more powers

17 Jan 2007

According to reports in The Irish Times, the country’s communications regulator ComReg is to be given new wide-ranging powers under legislation to be published later this month. The agency will reportedly take on a ‘quasi-judicial’ role under the new rules, which have been revised to give ComReg more teeth to tackle anti-competitive practices. Closely mirroring the powers of the Competition Authority, the regulator is set to be given the power to summons witnesses before hearings, examine them under oath and require them to produce documentation. The new legislation will also allow ComReg to impose fines of up to EUR4 million (USD5.18 million).
