3 ditches roaming charges

17 Jan 2007

Hutchison Whampoa’s 3 Group has launched a pricing scheme under which subscribers using its partner 3G wireless networks while overseas will pay no roaming charges. The scheme will allow 3 customers to travel abroad and use their existing voice and data bundles on any of its networks — SMS and MMS included. It will also no longer charge customers for receiving calls while abroad on a 3 network. The deal applies to all contract and pre-paid subscribers and, unlike with the deal announced by rival operator O2 in October, customers will not have to opt in or pay an extra fee to take advantage. The tariff will be introduced progressively in the UK, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland and Sweden.
