Bayanat awards mobile WiMAX contract

15 Jan 2007

Korean equipment supplier Samsung has been awarded a two-year contract to supply a mobile WiMAX network to Bayanat Al-Oula in Saudi Arabia. Deployments will begin later this year and will result in the largest 802.16e mobile WiMAX network in the Middle East. The system will have coverage in the country’s four main cities – Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Makkah – by the end of this year before being expanded nation-wide in 2008. Abdulmajeed Elshawa, CEO of Bayanat, said: ‘We envision that mobile WiMAX will revolutionise data services in the same way that mobile network technology revolutionised voice services.’ Bayanat won its public data licence in August 2004 and is Saudi Arabia’s largest alternative data services provider.
