China Unicom signs contracts for low-cost CDMA handsets

China Unicom has signed contracts with seven mobile phone manufactures to buy ten models of entry-level CDMA handsets, a source close to the matter told Xinhua Finance. The handsets will be aimed at customers living in rural areas but will still be capable of supporting value added services. The source gave no details but media reports have put China Unicom’s orders at around two million handsets. The suppliers include Huawei, Hisense, LG, Samsung, Nokia and Motorola.
