Dutch mobile operator Telfort, which was acquired by KPN Telecom in 2005 following a EUR1.12 billion offer tendered in June that year, has announced its intention to shut down its EDGE service ‘by the summer’, writes online news portal Telecompaper. It is understood that Telfort will continue to provide its ‘Breedband van Telfort’ mobile data service over KPN’s HSDPA network and that all of the MVNOs currently using Telfort’s network will also transfer to its parent company. A spokesman for the Dutch incumbent said no date had been set for the EDGE switch-off, but went on to say that all Telfort users would be able to use KPN’s network by the end of this year. The final shutdown of Telfort’s network is not expected until mid-2008.
