MTN traffic jumps in December

MTN of South Africa has reported a 49% year-on-year jump in text message traffic for December, while voice traffic was up by 46% compared with December 2005. 1.17 billion SMS messages were sent last month, while 1.87 billion voice calls were made. MMS traffic reached 8.8 million messages, up 400% year-on-year. MTN is South Africa’s second largest cellco in terms of subscribers, with 11.16 million users and a 33% market share at the end of September, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.
