Qtel and Airspan deploy WiMAX

3 Jan 2007

Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and Airspan Networks have announced the successful deployment of a combined WiMAX/Wi-Fi solution. The system was installed for the Asian Games in Doha during December, and was built using Airspan’s MacroMAX and MicroMAX base stations, connected to 300 Wi-Fi hotspot zones. The network was used to provide international news media with high speed internet access for data, VoIP and multimedia transmissions. Users obtained internet access primarily through the Wi-Fi zones, which were backhauled by WiMAX to the internet. Following the Games, the Airspan network equipment has been re-deployed in Doha and at other locations across Qatar, enabling Qtel to offer broadband wireless internet access.
