Digicel blocked from launching in Solomon Islands

2 Jan 2007

The Solomon Islands’ monopoly telecoms provider, Solomon Telekom, says that it has obtained an injunction against Digicel Pacific, preventing its rival from providing any telecoms services in the country, pending a court decision. The islands’ High Court is currently deciding whether or not to uphold Telekom’s exclusive communications licence. Carribean-based mobile group Digicel is aiming to expand across the Pacific region; it reportedly holds an ‘experimental licence’ in the Solomon Islands, granted by the Telecommunications Authority.
