WiMAX licences awarded

18 Dec 2006

Germany’s telecoms regulator Bundesnetzagentur has awarded three nationwide and two regional WiMAX licences at the end of a three-day auction which raised EUR56.07 million (USD73.37 million). Luxembourg-based Clearwire Europe and German operators Deutsche Breitband Dienste and Inquam Broadband acquired the nationwide licences, paying EUR20 million, EUR16.5 million and EU18 million respectively. Italian MGM Productions Group paid EUR1.2 million for one regional licence, while German ISP Televersa paid EUR342,000 for two regional licences. Regional telco EWE dropped out of the bidding for a regional licence in the north as the price became too high for it.
