State-owned Viettel, which offers fixed line, wireless and broadband services in its home country of Vietnam, has won a 30-year GSM licence in neighbouring Cambodia. The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPT) has granted it a concession to operate mobile services in the 1800MHz band, and is also considering Viettel’s request to use the 800MHz band. The Vietnamese firm is also permitted to offer internet services in Cambodia for a period of 35 years. It will now devise a project to submit to the Ministry of Planning and Investment for approval ahead of a service launch. Earlier this year Viettel was licensed to provide long-distance voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) telephony in its next-door neighbour for 35 years.
