MOTC goes with nationwide WiMAX licences

6 Dec 2006

Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has published its proposals for issuing two nationwide WiMAX licences. The ten-year concessions will each offer 30MHz of spectrum between 2.5GHz and 2.69GHz and are likely to be awarded by next June. The National Communications Commission (NCC) had called for nine regional WiMAX licences to be made available, but the MOTC says that national operators will be better placed to compete with 3G mobile providers, which also have nationwide concessions, plus it will rule out the possibility of interference between regional networks. The Ministry is reserving two further bands of spectrum in the same band which will be offered if there is sufficient demand.
