The Russian CDMA450 operator SkyLink is to team up with the country’s largest cellco MTS to offer a combined GSM/CDMA service to users in Moscow. SkyLink is targeting mobile data users who are unhappy with the data transfer rates available on MTS’ GSM system, which reach a maximum 100kbps. SkyLink’s CDMA2000 1x EV-DO system provides data transfer at speeds of up to 2.4Mbps. The firm says MTS customers will be offered a SkyLink subscription for their data requirements, while they will continue to use the MTS network for voice calls. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. SkyLink, which is one of Russia’s smaller mobile operators with only around 450,000 subscribers, is also trying to forge a similar tie-up with number three cellco MegaFon, according to a Prime Tass report. Both MTS and SkyLink include AFK Sistema among their shareholders.
