Oman’s incumbent telco Omantel is to invest up to OMR10 million (USD25 million) to meet increasing demand for its services. The upgrade will see Omantel’s metropolitan transfer rates boosted to 10Mbps, as well as network expansion into rural areas. It intends to install a series of high speed fibre-optic rings in the Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah and Al Dakhiliyah regions. Contracts have already been signed with Siemens and Alcatel to increase ADSL broadband capacity from 14,000 lines to 44,000.
